This is a tricky question. I just did a complete overhaul on a cub and my rear main seal caused me all kinds of trouble. The original style seal is a steel one that presses into the retainer. this aluminum retainer is supposed to be replaced with a new one to use the new style seals. The new seals is a rubber unit that fit kind of weird into mine. This seal is supposed to fit tight but just slipped in on mine. It appears like the flywheel will hold the seal in place when installed but don't be fooled like me, it doesn't. The Case IH dealer told me the retainer was about $150 and available in a few days(A.A. Anderson in Harvard, IL look on Case IH website for phone number). I installed my seal and worked fine for a couple of mows and began to leak. I have been told by the dealer mechanic silicone will not work to seal. I tried "lock-tite gasket eliminator" I guess i did not work. Finally I discovered my opil level was too high (forgot to drain the oil filter on oil change) and the seal has not leaked since. BUT I don't know if the problem is still there and it is only a matter of time for a replacement. SO! be careful. If the seal fits loose, you need a new reatiner to save the headache. If it fits tight GO FOR IT! please let me know how it works!! and I hope this helps.
