There is backlash adjustment in the gearbox, but I don't recall how it is supposed to work. If the play is only in the steering wheel shaft, you could probably get a good machine shop to rebuild the steering pin (part of the left steering shaft) and re-shape it. If the play is between the left and right wheels, you would need the gears re-shaped. Also check for sloppy bushings where the shafts come out of the gearbox. Sloppiness there can give you a surprising amount of play. If it comes down to replace or rebuild, you'll find those gearboxes are scarcer than hen's teeth and pretty pricey. You can use one out of a 300U, 350U or a 460U. I opted to rebuild mine.
