Since you rebuilt the carb you may not have set the float level to the correct height or set too low. A lean burning engine will backfire. Since it doesn't do it after it warms up also can be from a lean setting since a warm engine can run lean without backfiring. One way to tell if it lean is check the color of the plugs after it has been run for a hour or so. They should have a light brown color on the insulator around the center electrode not white. Lean settings will also start to backfire when put under load. You could also do a compression test when the engine is cold to see if a valve is sticking if you don't think it is the carb. Bob
