If it is backfiring in the air cleaner side it is lean, if it is backfiring in the muffler then either too rich (check float level)or an exhaust valve is sticking a bit.(It might be freeing up some when the engine warms up a bit.) I guess some old engines had problems with valves being sticky after sitting for the winter. The book says squirt kerosene and oil on the valve stem to free it. Cars usually don't have valve sticking problems because they have heavy rate valve springs compared to slower running tractor engines with short lift cam shafts. A quick check of your plugs will tell you a lot about what is going on in there as well as a compression test if the plugs look the same color (Tan for good running, black for rich, whitish if too lean)Also you can tell if one cylinder is low on compression by the sound it makes when cranking. if it sounds like it wants to speed up once every two revolutions, then one cyl might be leaking.If it sounds consistant then all are leaking(but will have no power and sound popping like when running) or all are good.
