Hard to tell from the parts book diagram, but I think you are correct. I did notlook at that before. Looks like the inner axle bearing is contained in the axle carrier, not the transmission housing where I thought it was. Seal goes in first, then the bearing, then a retainer. The gasket at the axle carrier to transmission joint would still see oil. Sorry for the confusion.
