I would say that you teached them a valuable lesson. Unfortunately that does not help with the loss of your sons dog. One of the reasons for my post (in addition to the atv tracks, hunters, etc) was the fact I was standing in my creek bed last weekend with my wife looking over the "atv tracks" when an individual walked up right behind me and proceeded to build a fire for a cookout within 30 feet of us. For one thing he never knew we owned the property he was standing on, and had the mis-conception that he could do what he wanted in the stream bed without owner permission. I am sure I will be called a few names over it, but I am constructing fences where there were none, posting the property, and taking license numbers and calling the county sheriff for those who choose to ignore them. Your post is just another very good reason. I was taught to not carry a weapon unless you are willing to use it, and only use one if you are in a life threatening situation. I will have to think on that part, but I certainly do not feel comfortable confronting unknown individuals with loaded weapons empty handed. You were justified in your actions as these individuals entered upon your property with loaded weapons and killed your dog who was probably just going to try to defend his territory. They were fortunate to not have been prosecuted, and have had to pay for the dog in the process.

We arrived hoping to meet up with a man we knew had over one
