Dry black soot on the plugs and in the exhaust is normally a sign of too rich of a fuel mixture, or fuel not being consumed in combustion. After rebuilding my carb without solving the soot problem completely, and already suspecting my coil was 40 years old, I replaced mine and the soot problem went away. Good luck.
