The shock of applying the brakes while the clutch is still engaged is what breaks the disc free. When I worked for a JD dealership, we had a 4020 that was brought in at least twice. It was used to run a pump so it was always outside. Seems the clutch wouldn't disengage due to all the years of sitting outside.

At least twice a trip around the parking lot hitting the brakes was all it needed to free up the clutch. Eventually it did have to be replaced.
