One of my neighbors has a UD-14 (same engine) that he pullshis sawmill with. I pulled the head last year, had the valves ground and it cranks on the 3rd quarter turn just like his dad said it did in 1940 when it was new. Now, let me see if I can remember the starting sequence. The gas carburetor has no throttle, only a choke. The lever on the left (tractor left) that goes through to the right side does at least two things. It takes the ground away from the magneto and lets it fire, it closes the extra valves in the head that opens the combustion chamber to anextra chamber, thereby lowering the compression ratiofor gas and, it turns the float loose so that gas can come into the carburetor. All of this said, you crank it on gas with the lever in one position (don't ask me which) . You watch for your diesel fuel pressure tocome up on the gauge. There should be one on the injector pump. On a warm day, just as soon as the fuel pressure comes up, open themain throttle and throw the aforementioned lever to the run position.
