Right, those are the best ways to turn it over. 49 Cubber! gives real good advice there- make sure the switch is off, make sure she's out of gear, and lock down the brakes. One more thing you could try before digging in is to find a long screwdriver, prybar, ect., put one end to your ear and the other end to various parts/areas of the engine when it starts ticking. Might help you zero in on the problem. As you set the valves, take your time and make sure you feel certain that you have each valve correct before moving on-saves having to go back and repeating the whole procedure. You want the feeler gauge fit nice and tight while still being able to move it back and forth.
