History lesson please

I was at an auction a month ago and there was an IH 140 I believe and I was amazed to see the the engine etc did not sit on the centerline. Since that time I have seen a number of photos on this board as well as read some discussions about the 'beautiful offset tractors'. I was just wondering, what was the purpose or logic behind the offset tractors? I am probably making it glaringly obvious that I am not of farming heritage but hey, I have never tried to hide that anyway. Thanks for any learning that you can provide.
