Doug - That's definitely NOT normal! What may have happened is this: Without a battery to stabilize the electrical system, the generator will develop 15 - 20 volts or more - especially if the tractor has only a cutout relay (no voltage regulator). 20 volts across the field resistor at the light switch will cause the box to heat up pretty good. I recommend this: Reinstall the battery then keep a close eye on the temperature of the electric box the next time you run. Or if you must operate the tractor without a battery, first disconnect both wires from the generator (or take off the gen belt) before starting.
