Timing does make a difference - retarding the timing a little bit will reduce chamber temperature without sacrificing a noticible amount of power. If your problem persists, try using higher octane fuel. Since you have high compression, poor fuel could cause preignition in your engine. Preignition is not usually a problem for 87 octane fuel in engines with a compression ratio below 7 or so. However, 89 octane fuel might be worth a try. If the problem is preignition, your engine will run better and shut off when it is supposed to with higher octane fuel. Good Luck!!
