I wouldn't say they had weak transmissions but there are two things that need to be considered, age and water. These tractors are now 50 to 60 YEARS old, eventually something is going to wear out. Most of these had 15 to 20 years hard labor before being phased out of main field work and others never where phased out as you mention the M that still sees hard use. IN most of the 66 through 86 series tractors being 20 to 40 years newer it is considered normal or even required that they have extensive overhauls to continue their usefullnes. Most Hs & Ms never saw this kind of maintenance. No work was performed until a major problem presented itself. The other problem is their propensity to collect water in the transmissions. Water that cause rust that ravages bearings especially ones that see the kind of strain that the main input bearing sees.
