Sounds to me like you do not have the timing cover off engine, so don't be concernded about the marks on the gear. But I think you should turn the engine to TDC # 1 cylinder then remove the distributer but the govener on, set the distributer rotor on # 1 and adjust the T drive out the front of the distributer so the rotor stays on #1 and put togeather. I Need to look at my B govener if I forget to set timing no big deal but I have had distributers more times than I could count.
