Sounds like you're doing just fine. Your tractor is probably in good mechanical shape since it starts that well. Smoking after start-up is common with these engines, and holding the glow plugs on until it clears up like you are doing is exactly what you should do. The only real difference between farm fuel and on-highway fuel is that farm fuel is tax-exempt and it has a red dye in it to identify it. Get caught with red fuel in your diesel-powered pickup and your're in big trouble! You are right, though, for one tractor it isn't worth the trouble of getting farm fuel. Was there a screen around the outside of the hydraulic filter? Your 606/2606 probably has the same hydraulic system as a 460, which would be about the same as my 240, mine has a screen around the filter, but some guys say their 240's don't have a screen around the filter.
