Steven: I'm not sure that it wasn't a waste on all of them. As I understand it the mechanism was not a solid lock, but rather an oil bath clutch device. I had it on my 1066 and I cant say as I ever saw it hold on a hard pull. May be the first year when I ran the tractor single wheel. Soon as the duals were put on the diff lock was history. At least when you stepped on pedal you couldn't tell the difference. I worked quite soft land and found more rubber on the ground was more benefit than diff lock. I ran 1066 with duals and no weight added. I only plowed 250 acres and pto was why I needed big horse power. I used 20' disc and cultivator, not a big load for 1066 on some soils. If you go to discs and cultivators much wider than 20' your frames get much heavier and a lot more expensive. Cost and soil compaction were the rreasons not to go larger. Plus with 20' gear I could put my crop in ground in 3 days. Those diff locks on small utilities that were a solid lock up were a great item on a light tractor especially doing loader work. I don't think you could put a lock like that on a big tractor without beefing the rear end up and I don't mean beefing up a little either. If a tractor the size of a 966, 1066 or 1466 locked up like the small one under the heavy load for example a big cultivator I think it would just turn cross ways. The little tractors would do that on a drawbar pull. The only reason it worked well on them was loader or 3 point implement kept them straight.
