Jeff, there is a tool just for that, it looks like a large two prong fork that you slide in under the tie rod and you hit it with the hammer and drive it in and as you do you force the tie rod out of the steering arm. Auto supply shops have them and they are cheap. We have an air gun with a fork for tie rod ends at the shop I work at and it takes them off in about two to three seconds. Heat would help but it will ruin the rubber cover, unless you are replacing everything new.....good luck from Mike in Exeter Ontario.
