I think may be I can shed a bit of light on this. Your grandfather probably did the same as my dad. Farmall 300's were notorious for just barely getting to PTO speed of 540. Also that set of notched teeth, (for want of a better word) would never stay in position especially at higher rpm. You would be going along baling and bingo that lever would slip out of the notch and all the way back to idle. That usually happened as the plunger was starting it's backward stroke, you know the rest of the story. You could here my dad uttering four letter words clear across the farm. What most guys did was spring the lever and linkage enough so you could hook the lever under the stop at bottom for full throttle. She didn't slow down on the old guys then. My dad started with a W4 then an H and a 300. He was still on the go when I bought the 560 and 656. What he could never understand was W4, 560 and 656 all had friction throttle levers. Why in H$%^ did IH want to annoy us with those damn notches, on the letter series, 300-400 and 350-450 Farmalls.
