Wowah! I just did the same on my B two weeks ago. Pulled the cover, lined up the dot's on the gears, checked TDC, all looked well. Rubbed my hands together, squirted some starting fluid in the carb: BOOM! Muffler shot off the exhaust manif and dented my garage door. Let's try again... didn't want to pull the cover again, sooo.... stuck my fingering #1, make sure rocker arms are closed, checked rotor position, not even close. I simply pulled the plug wires from the distrib and moved back one - fired right up. Keep working it. If the wires are set right it should at least stumble.
