Fuel gauge

The fuel gauge on my 544 works like this, Turn the key on and the gauge does nothing, Tap the gauge and it goes to full no mater how much gas I have in the tank. I pulled the sender and checked it with a ohm meter and it seems to check out ok. Any ideas?
