Regarding the "no crank" condition you need to determine whether the problem's the wiring, the solenoid or the starter itself.

Connect one end of a jumper cable to the battery + post. Tap the other end to the power terminal on the starter (expect a spark when you make the connection!) If the starter engages when the connection is made, the problem is in your wiring or solenoid. If it does not, the starter itself is bad - probably a brush/commutator problem as one of the other posters suggests.
