SA transmission gear placement??

I had to tear down the tranny on my Super A to replace the countershaft, after putting it back together , it didn't sound right. Opened it up again and couldn't find anything wrong, but did find the 1st speed gear spacer missing.{#58338D} on the countershaft. Question--how thick is this spacer and is it really that important to tear the tranny down again to install one???
