I will bet a dollar to a doughnut that the pilot bearing in the crankcase is dry as the ARIZONA desert. In the past 10 yrs i have probably had a dozen or so of these split and same thing all are dry. I like to use neversieze on the input shaft when going back together as never have the spinning gear problem. This is an ongoing happening with them. Just push in the clutch wait a little and go while you are waiting with the clutch depressed just think of how much fun your 50yr old machine is to operate.
