OT: Chopping straw for new yard seeding

Hi Guys,
I figured if anybody would have a suggestion this would be the place!

Anyway had a new septic put in and along with my "landscaping" since the yard is tore up I have about an acre of yard to seed. Some of what I have done to funnel water away from the buildings has some good slopes to it so I want to cover the seeding with straw to keep the erosion to a minimum until the grass roots. My experience in the past spreading straw has not been quite what I would like it to be and I've noticed in other places that the straw appears to have been chopped into smaller pieces before being spread.

So any suggestions, methods, alternatives??
