The grinding is caused by some sort of drag. Either on the clutch face or on the pilot bushing. If it comes from the pilot bushing, it could be dry (of grease) or damaged such that it is binding on the input shaft. Either way you need to split it again to check. If it's dry, just stick your finger in with a dob of grease on it, and also coat the end of the inut shaft.

If it's the clutch face, then lengthening the clutch rod should give you more release, but that sounds like you allready tried that to the point where the clutch was allways slightly dis-engaged (since it would not move the tractor). So I would vote toward the pilot bushing.

PS- how heavy is the oil in your tranny case? Since there's always a limited amount of drag at the pilot bushing, the gear lube provides a little necessary drag to stop the input shaft from spinning.
