454 Steering wheel came off in my hands!

I was out back moving some stuff around the yard and my trusty 454 steering wheel came off in my hands when I pulled upwards on it, along with an oily splined shaft. It is power steering, and it was making a nasty cracking noise just before this happenned. I was trying to see if there was more slop than normal and it seemed to have LOTs of upward free play:-)
What am I in for to fix this? Is it a simple take off the upper shaft, replace a snap ring, and go on my merry way? Or is it a deeper problem than it appears?
