Hugh, I'm not the expert on this. On the A,B,C etc, the chassis and engine serials were more or less the same. After that it gets confusing. If as Guy's data book says IH used the C-123 prefix beginning with the 100 and 200 through the 140 and 240 (may have C135 -- not in data book), then obviously the engine serial numbers will be higher than the chassis serials. However, the Super C (123) had the same engine prefix (FCM) as the C (113), so I imagine they skipped some numbers before they started the Super C engine serials -- they probably did that also when the 100 became the 130, then the 140, and the 200 became the 230, since the chassis serials were all 501, so matching the chassis and engine serials becomes more difficult. Also someone that posts on this board says there are different 123's depending on when they were made and what tractor they were in. A C113 becomes a C123 with thinner sleeves, but there were also C123's with bigger bores. I have now written more than I know.
