Interesting also to here Bob's comment on the cold weather effect on batteries. I remember an old dairy farmer in our area, about mid 70s. He had one good modern diesel, he ran year around, (574 I think) and about 6-8 Farmall H, M, Supers, 300, etc. most operational, but some parts tractors, or could become that very quickly. This fellow was strictly a hay and pasture farmer. Used the old Farmalls for haying and spreading manure. Soon as those jobs were over, tractors were all put in shed, batteries removed and stored in heated building for winter. He said it was the only way to farm without repair bills. Old Farmalls and keep a few extras. You would see him at spring auctions and if an H or a 300 were going cheap he added it to his collection whether he needed it or not. He did keep an M or 2 but to him that was just excessive hp.

The old guy used to run an IH pickup also and when his last one wore out he died. Neighbors always said when IH stopped building pickups that killed him.
