Neal - Several possibilities here: Distributor is out of time, coil has failed (secondary winding is open), condenser has gone bad. Suggest you proceed like this: 1 - Pull the center wire out of the distributor cap. Stick the wire on a good spark plug, lay the plug on top of the coil then crank the motor. If you get a spark at the plug, problem's gotta be distributor timing - skip down to #4 below. If no spark, the problem's electrical - proceed to step #2 2 - Check the coil. Swap it for a known good coil if you can. Or if you have a VOM or DVM, take a resistance reading on the secondary (between the high voltage terminal and the coil shell). The meter should show somewhere in the neighborhood of 2,000 - 3,000 ohms or so. If you get a resistance reading near 0 or infinity, it means your coil is shot - time for a new one! 3 - If the coil checks out, suspect the condenser. Swap it for a known good one - condensers are cheap and easy to swap. 4 - If you find the coil is sparking, problem's gotta be ignition timing. First make sure the plug wires are properly installed. The wire from the #1 (front) cylinder should go to the terminal on the distributor cap marked "#1". Working CLOCKWISE around the distributor, the remaining wires should go to #3, #4 and #2 cylinders respectively. Next, mark the side of the distributor under the #1 terminal and remove the cap but leave the rotor in place. Turn the engine by hand (or bump it with the starter) until the timing mark on the crankshaft pulley is aligned with the pointer on the timing gear cover. Now look at the distributor rotor - it should be pointing to the mark you made on the side of the distributor, or pointing exactly 180 degrees opposite. If it's not, loosen the clamp holding the distributor base and rotate the distributor until the rotor aligns exactly with the mark (or is pointing exactly 180 deg away from the mark.) Then tighten it back down. The motor should be timed good enough to get it to start. Hope this helps!!
