Thanks Shawn, I thought that's what it was. I put a new rad cap on yesterday and did about 30 mins mowing (still pretty warm here in the UK) and there was no overflow, so I think the old cap wasn't quite holding the pressure up - in fact it did have a slight crack in it that would have caused the problem.
