The new seals are vastly improved over the old ones. You should not have a problem as long as the shaft surface is in good condition. With the new seal, you can press it in to a location where the shaft is good. There was no such thing as Viton in 1950. That is why they had to use multiple seal systems, and most of the old seals were leather, nowhere near as good as the new materials.
