You don't have live pto. The clutch has to be pushed in. If it still grinds, make sure the tranny is in gear, and the tractor isn't moving. Then it will go in for sure without grinding. The transmission gears have to come to a complete stop for it to go in without grinding. If your tractor is in neutral and you push the clutch it, it will take a second or two for the gears to stop spinning - and if your clutch drags at all, they'll keep right on spinning. This is why if you put the tractor in gear, it assures nothing is turning so long as you're stopped. Good luck.
