A live PTO is one that has it's own clutch, on an IH tractor the clutch was at the back of the tractor with a lever to the ingage or disengage the PTO The PTO drive shaft went through the transmission shaft to the back plate of the pressure for the transmisson clutch so the PTO shaft turned all the time the engine runs. There has been talk on this forum about independent and live PTO's. To me there the same, in the old days the PTO was driven by the transmission and when you wanted to stop the tractor the PTO had to stop as well so when running a PTO machine combine, bailer, mower not a good thing so the live or independent PTO is better wheather it has a clutch of it's own or a two stage clutch as long as one can stop the tractor and not the machine you got live PTO, that way the machine can be running full speed before you start moveing the tractor.
