Had a similar experience last year on my 53 Super A. I traveled a good distance to get a used PTO off of an A. When I went to put it in I noticed that the "tube" with (2) two notches did not mate up with the spline inside the transmission shaft. I had to order one with a male spline. That did not give the gears the proper back lash. Three shims later it worked fine. I had to take off the belt pulley and install the one that came with the Woods belly mower. I have the shifter sleve (tube) and the pulley if interested.
