You must have the levers in correct position for gas operation. That is the switch over lever forward and the diesel speed control all the way down in shut off. With the lever in gas postion, the magneto switch is opened to unground the magneto so a spark can be delivered, the float in the carburetor is released so gas can flow, butterflys in the manifold are set so air flows through the carburetor and the third valves in each cylinder are opened to reduce the compression for gas operation. In diesel mode the mag is grounded so no spark is delivered, the butterflys are set so air does not flow through the carb, the carb float is locked up and the valves to chambers in head are closed so you get diesel compression. The switch for the magneto is located in a chamber at the front end of the manifold. There should be a wire going from the magneto ground connection to the manifold chamber. Also check your plug wires, the rotor and points in the magneto. The magneto rotates COUNTER clockwise(IH gas engine magneto and dist rotate clockwise) so if you installed the wires for clockwise rotation it won't start. Also, the points cam has only two lobes with a 2 to 1 gear between the cam and the rotor, so the distributor can get 180 degrees out of time. To correct that remove the cover over the points chamber and turn the rotor 1/2 revolution and put it back. If the incorrect timing (180 degrees out or the wires installed wrong) you will be getting backfires and it will blow back through the air cleaner. Air cleaner oil will be blown out of the intake.
