Sounds like you got pretty good common sense to me, figuring out how to improvise your own "gear puller." Several years ago, my brother & I were tinkering with an industrial MF tractor he had bought and we were trying to decide what a little black rubber button was on the dash. He said it was the starter button. I said it was an ether injector button. We argued for awhile. He finally pushed it. Both of us almost crapped on ourselves as we discovered it was the HORN BUTTON!!! We got a good laugh out of it. It's always good to be humbled every now and then and realize you're not quite as smart as you think you are!
