Terry - I gotta agree with the others! Sounds like you took your voltage readings with a DVM - it's responding to the background "hash" from commutator switching. Bet if you stick an analog DC meter across the battery you'll see a rock-steady 6-1/2 to 7 volts or so. Long ago I learned that old tractor electricals are often best analyzed using equally ancient instruments. I have an ancient Simpson VOM (salvaged from a scrap barrel at work) for this kind of stuff. It sees more use around old tractors, etc than does the Fluke 87 that also lives in my toolbox...
