Steve, The timing mark is on the flywheel. The pointer is part of the bellhousing cover just behind the oil pan. Many of these covers are missing and so is the pointer. The timing mark only indicates top dead center for 1&4 cylinders and is quite difficult to find. Position your crankshaft for top dead center on #1 and look for the mark on the bottom of the flywheel. Use the hand hole for observation. Most engines equiped with magnetos cannot be timed with a timing light. Actually, none of the letter series tractors can be timed with a timing light because no spec's or timing marks are provided for running timing. Later magnetos (H4 and J4)provide only fully retarded or fully advanced timing. The impulse retards the timing for starting. Once the engine starts and the impulse disengages, the timing is fully advanced. Running the engine at speeds low enough to allow the impulse to engage is not recommnded because it is detrimental to the impulse assembly. Thus, you can see that with only top dead center timing marks, there are no advanced timing marks to allow use of a timing light. You can only set static timing per the procedure in the manual.
