The 300 was a great tractor to pull. It appeared to have to correct weigth to power ratio. The other thing was the proper weight distribution between rear and front axles. We had one from about 1955 til 1962. Its only problem was the small gas 8 ? gallon gas tank. When you were working it hard the tank had to be filled 3 or more times a day. Used to burn 1000 gallons a gas a season but gas was only 20 cents a gallon then. Traded it for a B414D in 1962 but the B414D wasn't the trator the 300 was but used 1/4 the diesel fuel.

Used to use the 300 in the woods all winter hauling logs. Hauled some huge oaks like the one you did but on frozen ground. There are tricks to hauling logs:
1)Also hook to the smallest end, reason dosen't dig into ground as much.
2) Hook tractor as close as possible to log, reason to transfer more weight to the trators rear wheels.
3)If tractor has a drawbar for 3 point hitch or like the 300's fast hitch drawbar lift it to the top, again to transfer more weight to the rear wheels but you have to be careful with some trators doing this or the front end will go in the air. Not a problem with 300, never stood it on end but did stand the B414D on end until the lower drawbar touched the ground.

Today's Featured Article - Talk of the Town: Winterizing Engines - To Drain or Not to Drain? - by Russ Berry. What is this strange attraction I have to equipment and machinery? How did I get this way? I came from the suburbs and own a small horse farm in rural Loudoun County, Virginia. You can call me a "weekend farmer." The local farmers do. Does it bother me? No. I am just happy to have their friendship. At least the word "farmer" is in my title. But what is the attraction? How can I explain the sensation and exhilaration I feel when I turn the key and hear the engine come to life (most ... [Read Article]
