Everone else has chimed in on this so he goes mine. The shift rail's detent spring may be rusted preventing the metal ball from locking the rail in its position. I've seen this happen on two H's in my time. The springs are on the underside of the top cover and this is where the moisture collects. In particular the spring nearest the gear shift. The gear shift opening must provide for the entrance of moisture to the trans. The springs are still available from Case/IH. To get to them you'll need to remove the top cover and put on a new gasket when done. When you have the cover off you might as well check for other things as well. There are 4 metal ball detents and springs. Good luck.
