MW Trouble

Need a little help guys! I purchased a M with a M and W hand clutch that is apparently in need of work. The cover has a 3/4 by 3/4 key that fits into a slot on the exterior of the clutch. Because of this key the handle is immobile and there must be an explaination. I have no literature on the clutch and I'm sceptical about tearing it down blind. If any body could shead a little light I would really appreciate it. ED
