This one is from you can believe me or not. I have both of the clutch based PTO's.... The "Early" model clutch types have to be prefilled from the vent hole in the top. This prevents the PTO from running dry while the oil sloshes it's way from the differential to the PTO. It is only designed to maintain the level once the it is full. This prevents the PTO from emptying the transmission if a large leak starts. You can over fille the transmission and it will work it's way in, but the safe way is to fill it from the vent hole.
