better paint

I have painted a lot of tractors using IH red from my dealer. I am old fashioned and have never used automotive paint, clear coat, or hardner of any kind. However I would like a more durable finish on the tractors that I use everday.I was wondering if a couple of coat of clear coat could be applied over IH red from my dealer?. Also does clear coat make the paint tougher, or just shine more? Any help or suggestions you could give would be greatly appreciated!
