I tried all sorts of methods to clean the gas tank on my M, it was really a mess, I finally tried the muriatic acid trick, used it full strength, and that did the trick. If you use this method, be extremely carefull, this is nasty stuff. Another trick I learned, after you get the tank clean, install a riser pipe in the fuel inlet of the sediment bowl assembly, about 1 inch tall, and then a stainless or brass fine mesh screen on top of the riser pipe, sticking up about another 1 inch or so, the reason for this is because the tank is never 100% free from rust.
