Before starting, remove all the spark plugs and squirt some crankcase oil in every cylinder.
If you have an engine crank, crank the engine over with the spark plugs removed and be sensitive to any binding. If it binds then possible valve stuck shut. Next if you have a compression guage quickly check each cylinder. If there is compression then there are no valves stuck open. If you don't have a compression guage but have a friend crank the engine and stick your thumb over each spark plug hole one at a time checking for air pressure.

If there are any stuck valves they will have to be corrected before attempting to start with starter.
