Sounds like you will need to pull off the top cover of the transmission to take a look-see. I haven't had the privilege of doing this on either of my C's yet. I am sure there are others that can give you some guidance on the do's and don'ts. A shop manual would be very helpful. Looking at the parts manual for a straight C doesn't look like it is tooooo complicated. I would guess that you need to get the gear shifters lined up in neutral before putting the cover back on, making sure you don't bump something as the shifter lever is dropped into place. Easier said than done, I'm sure. Good luck.
