patperry: I'm in Canada and use 15w-40 in everything from 4 cycle lawn mower, SuperA, 130, 140 and Buick Lesabre. 30 years ago I was running 9 tractors from SA to 1066, 4 GM gas trucks, an Olds and several small engines. I was using 3 separate oils as suggested by oil company. Employees kept getting oils mixed up, so I changed every vehicle to the exact diesel motor oil recomended for 1066, 30 in summer 20 in winter. 15 years ago changed to same grade oil only 15w-40. Of 5 diesels, none of them were ever rebuilt under 10,000 hours. Never had V8 GM that didn't go 300,000 miles. As near as I can tell my SA has never been rebuilt and 130 was 25 years ago. My lawn mower was given to me by the IH dealer the day I paid him for my new 1066 in 1975. It has mowed about 1/4 acre ever since. Deck, wheels, push handle and knife have all been replaced. Engine is intact with a new carb. I forgot one item, 1/2 million miles on a Chevy 6.2 and last I heard it is still going. I have started some of those vehicles at -40, but very rarely. 0 to -20F is the norm in winter. A Farmall 300 was on farm 35 years, always 6 volt and was started unassisted both days it was -40. Am I right, I'll let you be the judge. In my opinion nothing you do to your vehicle is more important than the oil you use.
