Primer is pouras (sp?)anyway it will let moisture through and the metal will rust. I primed and finish painted mine then assembled with a liberal coating of grease. Sort of messy but I figured that it will help seal out the air and moisture and even if it got hard over the years it would be easier to break loose than two pieces of metal rusted together. I really did this for the next owner as I don't plan on ever changing the width on mine.
