The potatoes that machine was digging are much more than 4 inches deep. I think our potato harvester, which had a digger section just like the one you describe, would run about 10-12 inches deep. Like Hugh, says, though, the chain sections can be kind of expensive. If you live in potato country, check with potato farmers to see if they have old chain they want to get rid of.
